KEEPING THE FAMILY SAFE ON THE ROAD THIS SUMMER

Summer is almost here and in true Kiwi fashion that means trips to the beach, the bach or just exploring the many scenic spots around New Zealand.  

With increased traffic on New Zealand’s many windy and narrow roads over the summer months, it is important to take precautions and prepare to ensure you and your family get to your destination safely.

Safety has always been a priority for Mazda designers and engineers. Mazda’s vehicles with

i-Activsense feature a wide range of technologies to make driving as safe as possible including Lane-Keep Assist System (LAS), Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM). 

There are also other practical steps you can take prior to hitting the open road to ensure the trip goes as smoothly as possible and everyone enjoys the experience.

1.Prepare the car

It is important to regularly service your car and stay up to date with general maintenance. It will take just 10 minutes to check your cars basic components and you should do this monthly - especially if you are heading on a long journey.

Check your tyre pressure, especially if you are carrying additional baggage, passengers, or towing a trailer or boat, this should be done often and when your tyres are cold – you’ll find the correct tyre pressure in your owner’s manual.

Check your oil, water, coolant and washer fluid. It pays to check the condition of your wiper blades and give them a quick wipe down if needed while you’re there.  

Test the headlights on low and high beam. Check your parking lights, indicators, stop lights and reversing lights. If you find a light that isn’t working, see your Mazda Service Centre as soon as you can before you head off. Don’t forget to also check the lights on your trailer if towing.

Lastly, fill the tank up with fuel for a quick getaway on the morning of your trip.

2.Know what’s in store

It may seem obvious but plan your route before you leave. Check for traffic, roadworks, or delays to avoid unexpected delays or frustrations. Also check the weather forecast before you leave.

The beauty of travelling by car (especially if it’s a Mazda) is that you have the freedom to enjoy the journey. Identify some spots to take a break where you can grab yourself a coffee and an ice cream for the kids. 

3.Travelling with kids? Pack snacks and entertainment

Keeping the kids entertained will minimise driver distraction so make sure you charge all devices, headphones, and pack car chargers before you go!

Keep everyone happy with lots of snacks and hydration, save some of the children’s favourite snacks and wait until you’re close to your destination to surprise them!  

Share the Bluetooth, no one wants to listen to dads 80s rock or baby shark the entire trip so split up the trip using key landmarks to mark time for DJ change overs.

4.Let people pass you if you’re driving slow.

If you notice cars lined up behind you, be courteous and when it is safe pull over to let them pass.

Believe it or not, you are breaking the law if you have four or more cars lined up behind you and fail to pull over.

This is especially important for people towing boats or caravans. Most New Zealand roads have pull-over spots so when the need arises make use them.
